64 Bangladeshis detained at Greek border

Sixty-four Bangladeshis have been detained on a highway in northern Macedonia, bordering Greece. Police arrested them during regular patrols.

The 64 Bangladeshi migrants were detained from a truck on Monday. However, the driver of the truck has escaped.

The detained migrants have been relocated to a town called Gavegeliza near the border, local police said in a statement. However, no details have been released about them yet.

The so-called 'Balkan migration route' through Yugoslavia has been closed since 2015. The Greek-North Macedonian border has also been closed this year due to the Corona epidemic. However, the local police said that even though the border was closed on paper, human trafficking is still going on on this route.

Every year many Bangladeshis are losing their lives trying to reach Europe by these routes. Many are being held captive by human traffickers and have to pay large ransoms.
